Al Gharafa Sports Club was founded in 1979 as Al Ittihad, but changed its name in 2004 to reflect its geographical location in the Al-Gharafa district, north-east of Doha's city center.
Several local, regional and international events were hosted in this club including the 17th Gulf Football Tournament, International Friendship Tournament and 15th Asian Games DOHA 2006.
Al Gharafa's Clemerson was crowned as top scorer with a total of 27 goals in Qatari League 2007-2008. The Al Gharafa’s coach Marco Paqueta won the extremely competitive coach of the year award.
